On Saturday 5th Feb, Charlton host AFC Wimbledon at The Valley. Charlton Women then play Watford Women on Sunday at The Oakwood, with both games themed around Football v Homophobia’s month of action.
The club has run a Football v Homophobia-themed matchday in each of the last five seasons, but this is the first time the theme will cover both the club’s home games in one weekend.
The weekend, run in conjunction with the club’s LGBTQI+ supporters group, the Proud Valiants, aims to promote equality and tackle discrimination in football.
As part of the University of Greenwich’s ongoing partnership with the local club, free rainbow wallets will be handed out to supporters.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jane Harrington said,
“I am proud of the work that the university has and continues to do to make sure we live in a society without homophobia. The ongoing partnership with Charlton Athletic FC is core to ensuring we go beyond our campuses and into the local community to promote these positive messages as set out in our strategy 2030.”
David Hockham, chair of the LGBT+ Staff Community said, “The university has placed EDI at the centre of its new strategic vison. Supporting these games is an important sign which says homophobia has no place on and off the pitch.”
Themed events over the weekend include
- The club’s Family Activity Zone will have Football v Homophobia themed worksheets
- Proud Valiant ambassador Paul Mortimer will be the club’s guest on CharltonTV and in the CharltonTV Lounge
- A pre-match pitchside presentation to showcase the club’s award-winning Football v Homophobia work
- Rainbow imagery across big screen and corner flags
