This term, we’re inviting all staff and students to take part in our Nature Spotters Project, a simple, flexible way to explore the natural world around you using iNaturalist. Whether you’re grabbing a coffee, or taking a study break, you can contribute to real scientific research while boosting your wellbeing.
Using iNaturalist, you can record plants, animals, and insects you spot, right from your phone. Every observation helps build a clearer picture of biodiversity in our campuses.
We will first run a trial of this programme from now to 12 June. Results will be shared and we will collect feedback of how this can be improved.
How to take part
Getting started is easy:
- Download iNaturalist and create an account (see here for guidelines)
- Join “University of Greenwich, Campus Biodiversity” project
- If you are using your phone, click “Menu”> “Projects”> Search “University of Greenwich, Campus Biodiversity”>Click “Join”
- Take a photo of any plant or animal you see in any of the campuses.
- Upload it and let the experts help identify it
That’s it—you’re contributing to real scientific data!
Teams group
We also have a Teams group to share observations, ask questions, and communicate with other nature lovers. We will also share resources and may hold activities via this platform. Join the group now.
Why join?
Spending even a few minutes noticing nature can help reduce stress, improve focus and mood, and create a sense of connection and belonging. No prior knowledge or experience is required. Just grab your phone and take pictures of creatures you are curious about!
