This accreditation period marks 12 years of the University of Greenwich becoming a Fairtrade University. Our commitments are towards increasing the level of knowledge and understanding of Fairtrade, but also supplying Fairtrade products across our three campuses.
Supplying and campaigning for Fairtrade aligns with our university Sustainable Food Policy and our target to meet net zero by 2030. Many small-scale farmers and workers in countries most affected by climate change are often experts in adapting to the challenges it presents.
Fairtrade can offer farmers a chance to earn a better deal for their commodities, and in turn supplying them with more resources to invest in taking on climate change.
Halciyone Biju Mathew, on behalf of the student auditor project group for University of Greenwich & SU, said:
The dedication and commitment demonstrated by the team in their Fairtrade initiatives have significantly contributed to promoting ethical trade practices. Their continuous efforts in ensuring transparency and sustainability throughout the supply chain are commendable and truly make a positive impact on both producers and consumers.
We’d like to thank our university catering staff as well as our partners: Grayson’s, Sodexo and Greenwich Students’ Union. Thank you to all of our staff and students who have shaped our university to reflect our values and helping us achieve excellence in all that we do.
If you would like to find out more about Fairtrade, whether that’s research, teaching or taking part in future Fairtrade Fortnight events, then please do get in touch with the Sustainability Team.
