Postgraduate research (PGR) students are an important part of the research activity of the University of Greenwich. We want to be an outstanding place to study and for all our PGR students to feel supported and happy.
These future research leaders generate important research outputs, engage current academic staff in cutting-edge impactful research, and contribute to the success of the university through the Research Excellence Framework. This is why we have decided to enhance our PGR student experience through focussed leadership and improved coordination of the PGR student journey across directorates and faculties.
The new Greenwich Doctoral College (GDC) will enhance the following key activities:
- Leadership and Management of PGR students across the university, including coordinating the growth of PGR student numbers, management of the VC Scholarship allocation, increased engagement in UKRI funded Doctoral Training Programmes (DTPs) and Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs), and engagement with the University Alliance.
- Coordination of the PGR student journey from application to graduation working with faculties and directorates, including maintenance of student records.
- Coordination and delivery of training for PGR students.
Greenwich Doctoral College will also coordinate development of R&KE skills for Academic Staff at all levels from early career researcher to professor.
The Greenwich Doctoral College will operate virtually and will sit within Greenwich Research and Innovation (GRI), replacing the existing Research and Enterprise Training Institute (RETI). All PGR students should also belong to a Research Centre, contributing to and benefiting from the research culture and environment that they will provide. It is expected that the Greenwich Doctoral College will launch in Autumn 2024.
Professor Andrew Westby, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Knowledge Exchange) says:
I am delighted to announce the creation of the Greenwich Doctoral College, which is the outcome of two complementary streams of work run over 18 months with many of our academic and professional services staff, and PGR students. There has been positive engagement from across the university with some valuable improvements already implemented. The Greenwich Doctoral College is a testament to our dedication to push boundaries and make a real difference to our PGR student experience.
