International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia

TLDRoffon

Today is marked as International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia (IDAHoBIT). This date was specifically chosen worldwide to commemorate the World Health Organisation’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.

While lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people have made tremendous progress claiming rights and inclusion over recent years, globally many continue to face widespread discrimination and violence. There remains over 70 countries in the world where still same-sex relationships are illegal, and in 10 of these countries the punishment could be death. Still today it is estimated that 70% of the world's population live under laws and regulations that limit freedom of expression around sexual orientation and gender identity.

The university is very proud of its diversity and inclusivity. Over recent years we have featured in Stonewalls Top 100 Employers but there is still more to be done and our relaunched LGBT+ Staff Network will be holding a series of meetings and events which you can be involved in (both for those who identify as LGBT+ or who see themselves as allies). To get involved please contact lgbt@greenwich.ac.uk

Look out for the rainbow flag flying today in the grounds of Dreadnought and Stephen Lawrence Building and at Pembroke building to raise awareness of the human rights of LGBT+ people, commemorate IDAHoBIT and celebrate diversity.
