You can listen to the first episode, an interview with writer, designer and activist, Peter McGraith here. In it, Peter, one half of the first gay couple to have been legally married in the UK in 2014, shares his reflections on Pride and its significance.
Last weekend saw over a million people mark the 50th anniversary of the first Pride in London. Since 1972, there has been progress for LGBT+ people in the UK such as Section 28 (which banned in the “promotion of homosexuality” in schools) being overturned in 2003 and the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act being passed in 2013. However, the LGBT+ community still faces challenges. Trans people have to wait for years for gender affirming healthcare on the NHS and LGBT+ charity, Stonewall, reports that only half of LGBT+ people feel that they can be open about sexual orientation of gender identity with everyone in their family.
Spill the Tea aims to explore the degrees of equity, equality of opportunity and oppression experienced by the LGBT+ community. Through in-depth interviews, listeners will be able to grasp a more nuanced view of the varied lives of people within the community. Further episodes will be released in the next academic year, so subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. The podcast is aimed at a general audience, so please share with your networks both in and outside of the University.
