The course has been developed by the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID), a national charity supporting people who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus. It is designed to support colleagues in developing their understanding of deaf awareness, inclusive communication and creating accessible environments.
About the course
The Deaf Awareness eLearning course is a self-paced online training module available through Horizon. It provides an opportunity for colleagues to build their awareness and confidence in relation to deaf awareness and inclusive communication.
The course takes approximately 90 minutes to complete.
Why this training is important
Creating an inclusive university community means ensuring that staff, students and visitors are able to communicate, participate and access information in ways that work for them. When people feel understood, included and able to engage fully, it fosters belonging.
Deaf awareness is an important part of this. Colleagues may work with, teach, support or interact with people who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus, and this training will support greater understanding of how we can communicate more inclusively and confidently.
Small adjustments in how we communicate and share information can help create a more accessible, respectful and welcoming environment where everyone feels valued, included and able to contribute.
Supporting colleagues to develop deaf awareness contributes to the University's commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, helping to advance the priorities of our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Action Plan: inclusive environments, inclusive practices and building belonging across our LASE community.
Who is the training for?
The training is relevant to all staff and may be particularly useful for colleagues who:
- work directly with students, staff, visitors or members of the public
- manage teams or support colleagues
- deliver teaching, training, advice or frontline services
- organise meetings, events or activities
- want to improve their understanding of deaf awareness and inclusive communication
How to access the training
You can access the course via Horizon Learning.
Staff are encouraged to complete the training as part of our wider commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and to help ensure that our University community is accessible, inclusive and welcoming for everyone.
