New exhibition celebrates 125th anniversary of Natural Resources Institute

A new photographic exhibition is blending the past and present to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Natural Resources Institute (NRI) at the University of Greenwich’s Medway campus.

The exhibition, which is being displayed in the Library Cafe Gallery until 30 November, features photographs by Professor Keith Tomlins and Dr Lora Forsythe, both of whom work at the NRI.

Blending photos from 1906, when the Medway campus buildings were only three years old and part of the Royal Navy, with photos taken today, 113 years later, the two academics explore the changing character of the buildings and the people who worked there.

Professor Tomlins said: "There are photographs taken back in 1903, shortly after the Royal Naval Barracks in Chatham were opened, and this was a great opportunity to revisit these pictures, stand at the same spot that the photographer stood 113 years ago and compare them with pictures taken today.

"I think that just as the Royal Navel Barracks played an important part in the Medway Community back then, the universities have a critical part to play today.  These pictures seek to explore both changes and connections with the past. I think people will like the surprises."
