We are pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Jane Harrington as the University’s new Vice-Chancellor, to succeed the current Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Maguire. The appointment was approved by the University’s Governing Body at its meeting on 27 June 2019.

Professor Jane HarringtonProfessor Harrington, who is currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost at the University of the West of England (UWE), will join the university in early December.

Professor Harrington has worked in Higher Education for over 25 years and her specific interests include teaching excellence, the student experience, widening access into higher education and social mobility and improving partnership working across the business and university sectors.  She has been an integral part of improving UWE's performance in the National Student Survey and achieving Gold in the Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework in 2018.

On her appointment, Professor Harrington said:

I am really looking forward to working closely with you all, to ensure that we continue to deliver fantastic programmes that set you up for your future, and enable you to perform at your absolute best. I am passionate about working in partnership and look forward to meeting many of you as we continue to develop the partnership model across the university.

We are grateful for the involvement of staff and students throughout the recruitment of our new Vice-Chancellor. This included a survey of staff and students in January to help us identify what the attributes and priorities of a new Vice-Chancellor should be; the appointment of four staff members to the Governing Body's Vice-Chancellor Selection Committee, following a call for applications; and staff and student panels who met candidates in the latter stages of the recruitment process.
