From 11 November Pilkington Cafe, Medway campus, is going disposable cup free

TLDRoffon

Mugs will be available for free use in the cafe, reusable cups are available to purchase. We expect to save using 16,200 disposable cups, which laid end to end is 10 1/2 times the length of the Drill Hall Library.

What's more, your hot drink in a reusable cup is sold at a discount.  When you purchase a reusable cup, your first hot drink is free and you'll receive a discount of 10p for future hot drinks.

This change coincides with the start of Green Week; there's plenty of reasons why this is good for the environment, including:

  • It can take up to 30 years for a disposable coffee cup to decompose.
  • For health and safety reasons the paper must be virgin, prompting claims that it takes at least 100,000 trees to fuel Britain's coffee habit a year.
  • Reusing items is far better than recycling from an environmental perspective.
  • It contributes to Sustainable Development Goals #12 - Responsible Production & Consumption, SDG #13 - Climate Action, SDG 14 - Life Below Water and SDG 15 - Life on Land, with clear links to the Medway Sustainable Development Goals Project already underway.

So remind yourself to bring your reusable cup to campus - you don't have to wait until 11 November to start, remember "keys, phone, cup" before you leave the house, but if you do forget the cafes in Pembroke and Drill Hall Library will still serve drinks in disposable cups.
