Pride at Greenwich University

June is Pride month and this weekend Pride in London should have been taking place. But just because we won't have parades this year, it doesn’t mean that Pride and support for our LGBTQ+ students and staff is forgotten.

Greenwich Pride logoThere are plenty of ways you can get involved with the Pride celebrations and allyship.

Greenwich Student Union's (GSU) LGBTQ+ society is open to all students who identify as LGBTQ+ or allies. You can also view GSU's LGBTQ+ Greenwich Portraits, a series spotlighting LGBTQ+ staff and students, who they are and what their experience of being LGBTQ+ at Greenwich and in the wider world, has been like.

For staff, the LGBT network will be restating soon. Please email  Naseer Ahmad N.Ahmad@greenwich.ac.uk if you would like to join or would like more information.

Outside of the university, there are plenty of things going on. Royal Museums Greenwich have a range of online Pride stories and events, including trailblazing transgender service in the military, an LGBTQ+ Family Network virtual meet-up, and queer histories in the Queens house. And the Royal Borough of Greenwich have repainted seven crossings into the Pride colours, including one near the Avery Hill campus.

Medway Pride are joining with Gravesham Pride to hold a virtual Pride event in August and they are looking for contributions from creative performers, artists, poets, and so on to include in the event.

Our partners, Charlton Athletic Football Cub (ACFC), their charitable arm Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT), and their official LGBTQ+ organisation, Proud Valiants, are also holding a series of events that you can join in with.

One way you can take part is to host your own Pride celebration safely, on or offline, and share your videos and photos on social media for the chance to win some prizes. More details will be announced on CFAC, CACT and Proud Valiants' social media platforms.

London Pride have launched a campaign called You Me Us We, asking anyone who would have taken part in a Pride event this year, to instead pledge an act of allyship, from committing to writing to your MP about LGBTQ+ rights in the UK, to supporting LGBTQ+ artists, performers and business.
