Speaking of his appointment, Professor Lemm said:
We are very much looking forward to welcoming Professor Mark Littler at Greenwich. His leadership and research track record is excellent and will be much appreciated by students and staff at the School of Law and Criminology.
Professor Littler joins from Liverpool Hope University where he currently serves as the Deputy Head of the School of Law & Criminology. He has previously held academic posts at the universities of Huddersfield, Hull, Oxford, and Manchester, and has worked primarily on terrorism, extremism, and processes of radicalization.
He has written on most forms of contemporary extremist risk including radical Islam, the extreme right, anti-abortion activism, Covid conspiracism, misogynistic extremism, and non-legal forms of climate protest. He is particularly interested in the power of the internet and new technologies to facilitate the spread and evolution of extremist ideas, and has received grants to support work in this area from funders including the Commission for Countering Extremism and the Research Innovation Fund.
He is an associate editor of the journals Perspectives on Terrorism and Behavioural Science of Terrorism and Political Aggression, and serves as series editor for Routledge Studies in Digital Extremism. He has also served as co-chair of the European Society of Criminology’s Working Group on Radicalization, Extremism, and Terrorism (WG-Extreme) since 2020.
Speaking about his appointment, Professor Littler said:
The School of Law and Criminology at the University of Greenwich is one of the most exciting and forward looking anywhere in the country. It is therefore an enormous privilege to lead its outstanding academics and I am looking forward to working with them as we grow and develop our teaching, research, and external profile in ways that speak to the challenges of tomorrow.
Professor Littler joins the university on 1st April.
