The People Directorate are pleased to launch the staff apprenticeship offering for 2025. The application form should be completed by staff members who wish to undertake an apprenticeship programme for the purposes of development, starting in 2025. The apprenticeship programme will be delivered by the providers listed on the application form and will be centrally funded by the Government Apprenticeship Levy with no cost to the learner or Faculty/Directorate.
It is imperative that applicants have carefully considered and discussed the 20% (6 hours) Off the Job Time that is required to complete an apprenticeship. This time must be within contracted hours and not in addition to, so must be clearly accommodated and planned for.
Why do an apprenticeship?
For staff interested in gaining new skills, qualifying an existing skill or working towards a nationally recognised qualification to support career development- an apprenticeship could be the answer.
Application Criteria
An applicant’s current job role will need to support the training and development required for the chosen programme. This means that your role must provide opportunities for your skills to be practiced and developed on the job. The programmes cannot be funded unless this requirement is met.
Apprentices need to:
- Be in a role that will allow you to meet the learning objectives of the programme.
- Have support from your line manager.
- Be ready to commit to the minimum study requirement and have agreement from your manager that this can work with your role/ team.
- Have an employment contract that covers the length of the apprenticeship programme (including end point assessment)
- Be 16 years old or older and not in full time education.
- Have been resident in the UK for 3 years.
- Work required paid hours each week to complete the apprenticeship (30 paid hours a week or more)
- Hold a Level 2 in Maths and English (i.e. GCSE grade A* - C / 9 – 4 or equivalent) (only compulsory for staff under the age of 19 years old)

- Senior Leader Apprenticeship- April 2025 start – Deadline 11 April.
- Team Leader (Level 3- Hybrid)- Sept 2025 start
- Team Leader (Level 3- Virtual) Nov 2025 start
- Coaching Professional (Level 5)- July or Sept 2025 start
- Business Administrator (Level 3)- Rolling availability
- Associate Project Manager (Level 4)- Sept 2025 (or rolling availability)
- Data Analyst (Level 4)- Start TBC
Application Process
An application form should be completed after discussion with your line manager within the context of your personal and professional development identified at appraisal. Once endorsed by your line manager and the relevant PVC/Director, the application should be submitted to LND@gre.ac.uk
All sections of the form must be completed in full before submission, including line manager and PVC/Director approval.

Decision
Line managers and PVC/Directors will need to endorse the application following careful consideration of the required off the job time, the applicant's commitment and business case for their role and/or professional development.
With endorsement the application should be submitted to LND@gre.ac.uk by 9 June 2025.
If you are successful, you will receive an invitation to meet the learning provider and complete a baseline assessment. This is to assess your suitability for funding. Once complete the learning provider will inform of next steps including completion of the apprenticeship agreement and training plan.
All successful applicants and their managers will be invited to drop-in sessions before the start of their programme.
