Stephen Lawrence Day 2022 and remembering Stephen’s legacy

TLDRoffon

Stephen Lawrence Day, Friday 22 April, commemorates the life of the 18-year-old who was murdered in an unprovoked racist attack almost 30 years ago.

Stephen Lawrence ProjectionOn Friday 22 April, the university marked the fourth annual Stephen Lawrence Day with a special event at our Greenwich campus.

Guests, including Baroness Doreen Lawrence, mother of Stephen and member of the university’s alumni community, came together for a special reception at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery, Stockwell Street. Following an address from the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jane Harrington, guests were able to enjoy the gallery’s current exhibition, Back to Light, a photography exhibition bringing together selected work from young participants of the eye4change programme.

The evening concluded with a projection of Stephen, alongside the colours of the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation, onto the side of the Queen Anne building of the Old Royal Naval College.

The partnership between the Foundation and the university was established after Baroness Lawrence completed a degree in Humanities at Greenwich in 1995. Baroness Lawrence was awarded with an honorary doctorate by the university in 2006 and in addition to the gallery, the university also has a teaching building on our Greenwich campus named in Stephen’s honour.
