I have asked our ILS team to begin an important programme of work to strengthen the university’s cyber security as we work towards Cyber Essentials accreditation. This is a key step in making sure our systems, data, and people are further protected in an increasingly challenging digital world.
Cyber Essentials is a national standard that shows an organisation is taking the right steps to guard against common cyber threats. This work is not just about technology. It is a vital part of supporting the whole university, especially our Partnerships and Research & Knowledge Exchange (RKE) activity. Many partners and funders now expect cyber security accreditation as a requirement, so this programme will help us build trust, open new opportunities, and work more confidently with external organisations.
Over the coming months, our ILS teams will be reviewing systems, tightening processes, and improving the way we manage digital risks. Some of these changes will be behind the scenes, but others will affect how we all work day-to-day. You may need to learn some new things or make small changes to the way you use technology. These steps are not about adding barriers, they are about keeping us safe, protecting our work, and making sure the university can operate securely and effectively.
The most noticeable change for many of us will come as we introduce a new way to keep university data secure on your personal devices. If you access university systems like Outlook or Teams through your personal phone, tablet or computer, you’ll need to set up our new protection tools. Without this, the apps won’t connect with your Greenwich account. We will share more information with you as we start the roll-out, so please make sure you regularly check your emails and our Cyber Essentials page for updates.
By strengthening our cyber security now, we are putting the university in a stronger position to grow partnerships, win research opportunities, and protect the work we all do. As we move forward, ILS will continue to act as a strategic enabler helping the university work more securely and more efficiently.
Thank you in advance for your support as we move through this programme. And thank you to our teams across ILS who are working hard to deliver this essential accreditation, for all our benefit.
