Greenwich Refugee Student Bursary

We believe that education is a powerful tool for change, and are committed to ensuring that all our students have the opportunity to reach their full potential, because of, rather than despite, their backgrounds. This is what we call education without boundaries.

So today – as part of Refugee Week – we are launching our campaign to raise £2,000 for bursaries to support refugee students studying at Greenwich.

Refugees face many challenges, financial being only one challenge, when they arrive in the UK. With London being one of the most expensive cities in the world, this can make it difficult for refugee students to afford the basic necessities they need to succeed in their studies. With the price of food, travel and household bills increasing so much over the past year, students are struggling more than ever.

Furthermore, university applicants with asylum-seeker status are legally classed as overseas applicants, which means higher tuition fees and denial of access to financial support from the Student Loan Company.

Though the university do all we can to support our students – through financial support such as the Sanctuary Scholarship and Greenwich Student Fund, as well as through advice and guidance, we need your help.

The money raised during this campaign will provide 8 bursaries of £250 for living expenses to refugee students studying at the university.

Your donation will help us make a meaningful difference in the lives of our refugee students. Please donate today.

How you can help

Donate to our campaign – whatever the size of your donation, it will have a direct impact on this project.

Your donation will help to support refugee students with their increased living expenses:

  • £25 could cover a week’s worth of travel expenses for a student.
  • £50 could provide a student with emergency funding for groceries.
  • £100 could pay for most monthly utility bills, although costs are rising.
  • £250 could cover one entire bursary for a refugee student in need.

You can also email fundraising@gre.ac.uk to discuss matched giving incentives, including matching donations up to a fixed amount, or how to become one of our Giving Champions.
