Time to Talk Day, 3 February: It’s time to talk about mental health

TLDRoffon

Time to Talk Day is a campaign to end mental health stigma and discrimination. This year’s aim is to support communities to have more conversations about mental health than ever before. Time to Talk Day’s recent research shows how important open conversations are to everyone’s mental wellbeing.

The campaign runs throughout the UK and Co-op are raising £8m for several mental health charities to bring communities together to improve mental wellbeing. Along with delivering Time to Talk Day 2022, these vital funds are providing new services in over 50 local communities.

There is no one right way to talk about mental health; however, these tips will hopefully help you:

  • Ask questions and listen – this allows individuals a space to express their feelings.
  • Consider the time and place – people might not be in the right frame of mind to speak or would prefer to speak in a private place, please do not let this deter you from future conversations.
  • Don’t try to fix it – unless a person asks for advice directly it can be helpful to just listen.
  • Treat them the same – people who struggle with their mental health are still the same person they were before and do not wish to be treated differently because of their experiences.
  • Be patient – sometimes people aren’t ready to talk and that’s ok, attempting to talk to them may make it easier for them to speak later.

If you would like to make a donation to Mind, to help them be there for everyone that needs them you can do this via their website.
