Helena Rivera (A Small Studio) and Akil Scafe Smith (Resolve) listed as one of 109 best emerging British practices

New Architects 4 is the latest edition of a “guide for the open-minded client” that the Architecture Foundation periodically produces. The first came out in 1998 and included architects that have gone on to be leaders of their profession.227738

The book opens with a series of short essays that tackle issues such the climate emergency, Black Lives Matter, Covid, housing shortages, globalised finance, Australian bushfires and the fall of the Edward Colston statue. It then goes on to profile the 109 best emerging architectural practices.

“It’s a welcome recognition- I’m delighted to be in such good company and proud that our work is being appreciated by the profession. I’m also aware that all lists are subjective and there are many other practices that don’t get recognised and struggle to survive despite their talent. I am pleased that despite the challenges we have managed to created a studio where good projects happen with a strong and happy team, driven by talent, craftsmanship and resourceful thinking. Being small isn’t about the size, it’s about the attention to detail.”

“My team were excited by the news at being featured in New Architects 4, it is always a good feeling knowing that your work is being recognised. Our work is community-focused first and foremost, so though recognition from disciplinary or professional institutions is fantastic it isn’t (and never has been) the aim of the game. However, it was still a nice feeling to see our pictures in print!”
