The 2024/25 People & Planet University League, which ranks 147 UK universities against sustainability and ethics criteria, has named the University of Greenwich as the 7th best university in the UK.
In 2025, the People & Planet University League ranked UK universities according to 14 criteria including: Environmental policy, auditing and human resources, as well as an institution’s performance in areas such as carbon reduction, waste and water recycling, student engagement, education for sustainable development, energy sources, sustainable food and workers’ rights.
The ranking combines information made public by universities online, with raw data obtained from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) 2023/2024.
Vice Chancellor and CEO Professor Jane Harrington said:
“To move up 10 places is a fantastic achievement for the university and a testament to everyone in our community, showing that the entire university is committed to tackling the most pressing issues. This is reflective of all the hard work and commitment of our staff and students.”
Simon Goldsmith, Head of Sustainability said:
“At Greenwich, our ambition, set out in our Sustainability Strategic Action Plan, is to achieve ‘sustainability excellence in everything we do’.
“This vision is coming to life, reflected in our impressive rise in the University League tables and the leading practices embedded across teaching, research, professional services, partnerships, and beyond.
“From carbon reductions driven by our decarbonisation investments to improved reuse and recycling rates, to the integration of sustainability through our curriculum, our progress is tangible.
“Our Research Centres and academics are embracing the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we’re advancing responsible investment, delivering sustainability training and support to our staff, and collaborating with corporate partners to amplify impact.”
