This achievement recognises the University’s work in progressing race equality as an institutional priority.
The Race Equality Charter is a trusted, evidence-based framework designed to identify, investigate, and dismantle barriers faced by Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic students and staff in higher education. It provides independent scrutiny of the University’s efforts to improve equality, and aligns with its values and people, culture, and inclusion work.
The Charter supports institutions to undertake an assessment of their context, identify priority issues, and design and implement actions to advance race equality autonomously and flexibly.
Advance HE provides and manages the Charter infrastructure on behalf of the sector.
In November 2022, Professor Jane Harrington, Vice Chancellor and CEO signed Greenwich’s commitment to the REC principles with Advance HE and so began the process to seek Bronze Charter recognition.
Vice Chancellor and CEO, Professor Jane Harrington said:
“I am very proud of this award and very proud of all the hard work and dedication that it took to achieve.
“This work reflects our commitment to our beliefs and values as an institution and that we are making a positive and lasting impact on the lives of our staff, students and the wider world.
“We see this Bronze award as recognition of our progress so far, and we are determined to make it the first step on a longer journey.”
Shirley Joseph, Chartermark Manager at the University of Greenwich said:
“We are all incredibly proud of this achievement, this is deserved recognition and team work at its best.
“As part of the project to build our submission, we were required to undertake a full evaluation of race equality across the university and develop solutions and targeted actions in response.
“Our self-assessment team brought together a diverse group at various levels, and functions, and they worked collaboratively within our university values with a mix of attributes, expertise, and responsibilities.
“Through undertaking this process, we have designed an action plan that focuses on seven key priorities and aims to foster collaboration, enhance existing work and supports our ambition for race equality and race equity.
