VPSA blog: Our cheerleaders, Greenwich Mermaids make history and are crowned Grand Champions

TLDRoffon

The Anime & Gaming society raise £250 (so far) with their Pokemon Go charity walk, celebrating Women's History Month in March and celebrating Chinese New Year with CSSA, over to Jono...

I'm immensely excited to share with you all that our very own cheerleading team, The Greenwich Mermaids, recently placed first at their competition which took place at the Copper Box. As far as I know, this is the first time that Greenwich have placed first let alone also being crowned Grand Champions.

I'd like to say a huge congratulations to each one of you. You've made all of us here at Greenwich Students' Union very proud!

Jessica-Sky Motion, Chairlady of the Mermaids had this to say about the result and her teammates:

Getting zero deductions on our routine and winning National and Grand Champs was surreal. The competition team dedicates 5 hours a week to training and to have that hard-work recognised by winning those titles makes all those hours of training worth it.

I am immensely proud of this team and what they have achieved, they are a group of strong women who have each other's backs no matter what, and I cannot wait to get back on the competition floor with them next month for our final competition of the year.

Pokemon Go Charity Walk raises £250 so far

Our Anime & Gaming society recently organised and held their charity walk in aid of SpecialEffect. Here's what Tommy Monkhouse, President of Anime & Gaming had to say:

I feel the event went well, with a turnout of 40-50 people including representatives from Anime and Gaming, Pokémon Go Bexley, The Crow's Nest, The Hispanic Society and The Comp Society. The event showed real unity between societies and the SU as a whole!

We raised £250 so far and we're looking forward to raising more and giving the money to such a good cause in May!

Well done to everyone who took part!

March is Women's History Month

March marks the beginning of Women's History Month. Nathalie Grigorenko has worked hard to create a long list of activities throughout the month but one of the biggest is happening on the 13th. Nathalie had this to say about the event:

"Every girl has the right to fulfil her potential. UNICEF works all over the world to empower girls and women from disadvantaged societies to do so! In line with Woman's History Month, GRE student groups will come together for a fundraising event for UNICEF on campus. A day of fun party-themed games, alcohol filled prizes to be won ending with a HUGE techno night at Lower Deck, this is not a day to be missed!

Come along to Dreadnought atrium to get involved and donate to a good cause!"

Nathalie is a recent Greenwich Portrait and it's easy to see why when she works hard to produce large scale events such as this one alongside her studies.

CSSA Chinese New Year Gala

I was invited to join CSSA (Chinese Students and Scholars Association) on 18 February at their 2019 Chinese New Year Gala. It was a fantastic event that included guest speakers, traditional food, dancing, singing and much more. Pictured is the fantastic Lion dancers.

I'd like to give a special thank you to Feng Zhang for all his hard work within the society and helping to strengthen the relationship between the Students' Union and the society. I'd also like to wish all our Chinese students the very best for the year ahead. It's the year of the pig for those of you who are wondering!
