This year we are continuing our support for the World Wildlife Fund's (WWF) Earth Hour. We will be joining hundreds of millions of people across the world as we switch off our external lights at Greenwich Maritime and non-essential indoor lights across all campuses. We are taking part to show our commitment to saving energy, carbon reduction and climate action to save the planet.
Join in at home
Earth Hour is from 8.30-9.30 pm on Saturday 27 March and we want to encourage everyone to also participate at home. Be sure to let your householders know that you want them to join in and help ensure all lights are off.
If you want to go further then also turn off or turn down any electrical items that don’t need to be on. If you have a smart meter you can see what energy saving you can make by doing this. It is also good practice to check regularly that you aren’t wasting energy by leaving lights and other electrical equipment on. This will save you money and be good for the planet. You can also see energy saving and sustainability ideas you can do around the house.
Other great WWF resources to help you understand your environmental footprint and provide ideas to reduce these can be found by downloading the ‘WWF My Footprint’ app, the environmental footprint calculator or check out the WWF Facebook page for quizzes and information.
A time to reflect
People often find this process creates a time of reflection and this has been recognised by the WWF who are hosting a guided meditation for individuals across the nation led by internationally celebrated yoga teacher and scholar Dr. Chelsea Jackson Roberts. The purpose of this meditation will be to create a moment of solitude to calm our busy minds, practice gratitude for our planet and the many services it provides, and reflect on our commitment to saving the planet. To join this meditation click this link at 8.30pm on 27th March.
Our net zero by 2030 carbon commitment
