Originally from Ukraine, Faris enjoyed the sense of community at Medway Campus and the chance to put what he has learned into practice during his studies.

Faris Abbas has just finished his final year of an electrical and electronic engineering degree at the university's Medway Campus

He has particularly enjoyed the chance to put what he has learned into practice during his studies.

"My proudest moment was the work I did on my final project. I designed, built and implemented a wireless sensor network for a weather station," he explains.

A great community

Originally from the Ukraine, Faris was living in Qatar when he was looking for potential places to study. After some research, he chose the UK because it had one of the most highly rated higher education systems in the world.

"It was my father who encouraged me to apply to Greenwich. He was impressed by the large number of international students," says Faris.

His father's instincts were spot on. Faris has gained a lot from his time at university besides his degree. "I'm a very social person, so one of my main instincts was to make friends. Luckily, it's a great community here. There's always someone to have a chat with and you never feel alone."

An accomplished swimmer, Faris competed professionally in Qatar for six years. Here at the university, he enjoys futsal, an indoor five-a-side version of football, and has played for the Medway Futsal team.

Dream of green energy

Being so far from home, Faris has appreciated the fact that there is always help at hand, from the open-door policy of his tutors to the university's focus on student welfare.

He graduated in July 2017 and now plans to enrol on a Master's programme in the renewable energy sector or wireless and telecommunications systems.

Passionate about green energy, his dream job is one which allows him to focus on the development of renewable energy sources to provide clean, sustainable energy for everyone on the planet – for free.
