Mixed Reality Storytelling Workshop

12th Jul 2024 10am - 6pm

Greenwich Campus

Bathway Theatre, Bathway, Woolwich, London SE18 6QX

What will happen in the workshop?

In association with the Centre for Creative Futures, University of Greenwich, award-winning immersive theatre director Sacha Wares will lead a workshop on engaging audiences emotionally through mixed reality storytelling, taking the case study of her work Museum of Austerity. This mixed reality installation, made in collaboration with John Pring, editor of Disability News, employs theatrical and documentary techniques and the ‘HoloLens’ technology to explore the consequences of austerity for disabled people.

Sacha will guide participants through the narrative, dramatic, and aesthetic choices she made and both the ethical questions and technical challenges that arose.

Participants will have the opportunity to experience an excerpt of Museum of Austerity. They will then be able to:

  • Explore the mechanisms by which the holographic figures are placed on real world furniture and embedded in real world environments.
  • Explore the mechanism by which the spatialised sound fields are created and adapted for different venues.
  • Explore the show-running software that supports customised experiences for each audience member (including bespoke removal of sensitive content, addition of captions, audio description etc).

The workshop will end with a discussion about the narrative and dramatic potential of mixed reality storytelling, springboarding from the activities of the workshop and drawing on participants’ own experiences, interests and ideas.

What are the aims of the workshop?

This workshop aims to demonstrate and explore approaches to mixed reality storytelling; to facilitate dialogue and exchange of knowledge between practitioners who have a range of creative and cultural experiences; to develop understanding within this new area of creative practice, and to encourage mutual inspiration.
