We’re well into the 21st century, but our democracy seems as though it needs catching up. What are the ideas, methods and traits needed for a democracy to respond to the challenges of today? Join this session for a collective conversation as to whether politics can be a force for good and truly improve our lives.


Our Speaker

Jovan is the co-host of the ‘What’s Left' podcast, an amateur writer, political campaigner and commentator. He holds degrees from both Goldsmiths College, University of London and Selwyn College, University of Cambridge. Upon finishing all of his studies in 2022, he joined the External Relations Team at the Labour Party, working under Sir Keir Starmer. In this role, he led community policy and engagement efforts.

In January 2024, Jovan Owusu-Nepaul was selected as the Labour Party candidate in Clacton for the General Election. He was one of the youngest candidates contesting a parliamentary seat in 2024, aged 27. He stood against Reform UK Leader Nigel Farage MP. Receiving 7448 votes and increasing the Labour vote by a historic margin.

Since then, Jovan has worked on campaigns with the Good Law Project, makes routine TV and Radio appearances and now leads on Public Affairs engagement for Social Enterprise UK, building and bolstering our political relationships and strengthening the case for social enterprises.  He is on the board of The World Reimagined (led by former singer Michelle Gayle) and Social Ark CIC (led by Lisa Stepanovic MBE).

He is currently writing a book with Dr Robin Bunce (Cambridge University) on Labour Party history, expected to be released in 2027.
