Aims
To extend the student's knowledge and understanding of the social psychological nature and causes of behaviour in a range of complex social situations.
To critically evaluate theoretical explanations, methodological approaches and research findings in social psychology by testing them against a number of significant social issues.
To extend the students understanding and confidence in using social psychological theories, methods and research findings in attempting to understand social phenomena.
To deepen students’ knowledge of the historical context of key concepts in social psychology
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1 Describe and understand a range of psychological theories that explain significant social issues.
2 Understand ethical issues underlying social psychological research and be able to identify ways of addressing them.
3 Understand the historical context of competing social psychological perspectives and concepts.
4 Describe and understand a range of relevant research that evaluates social psychological theories.
Indicative content
Social Influence, Social Identity, Intergroup Conflict and Resolution, Social Change, Terror management.
Teaching and learning activity
Lectures and seminars, groupwork and independent reading.
Assessment
Essay 1: 50% weighting, 50% pass mark.
