What do the
drummer of Blur, an 800 metre Olympic Gold Medal winner, a founder of a London youth
social enterprise and three members of the female England Rugby team have in
common?
All are highly successful graduates of the University of Greenwich and are just some of the 16 alumni from 1926 to 2018 who are being recognised in this year's Greenwich Portraits exhibition.
The annual exhibition opens to the public on Thursday, 22 February and runs through to Friday, 23 March 2018. Photographer Diane Patrice, known for her photography of global artists such as Rihanna and Amy Winehouse has once again captured the spirt of each individual.
The outstanding alumni selected for 2018 include:
- Ann Brightwell MBE, Olympic champion, world record-breaking athlete. Cert Ed 1963, HonDEd 2017
- Raphael Bobie, a Londoner who founded Help the Youth in 2014 to help raise the aspirations of young people. BSc Public Health 2014
- Mohamed Conteh, former soldier and now finance officer for North East London Commissioning Support Unit. BA Hons Accounting and Finance, 2016.
- Hannah Cunliffe, Director National Historic Ships UK and based at Greenwich. MA Maritime History 2005
- Maxine Edward MBE, Head of IT at Charles Darwin School, BSC Hons Business Information Systems 1998; Claire Frost, Assistant Head at Langdon Park School, BEd Hons Secondary 1995 and Claire Green, Director at Green Thompson, BSc Hons Sports Science 1996. All former members of the England women's rugby union team.
- Dave Rowntree, musician, politician, computer pioneer and Blur drummer. HND computer Science 1984, HonLLD 2017
- Bhavenesh Thanki, banker in the making, University of Greenwich's President of the Trading and Investment Society and Chair of the Hockey Club (Graduates 2018)
Sarah Cretch, University of Greenwich's head of alumni and development said: "This year's portraits are excellent illustrations of the broad talent that emerges from the University of Greenwich offering students of the future aspiration for the careers that they can achieve.
"Our alumni for 2018 include an Olympic gold medal winner, rock star and founder of a youth social enterprise. Previous portrait alumni have included the 'godfather of gaming' Ian Livingstone, Sir Charles Kao, Nobel Prize winner and Jamie Adenuga, grime star JME."
The exhibition is free to the public and opens to coincide with the University of Greenwich's Open Day for prospective students on Saturday, 24 February at its three campuses at Greenwich, Avery Hill (Eltham) and Medway.
