Some of the best deaf and disabled poets will be presenting their work at the University of Greenwich next week.
The visible and the invisible: disability and creativity will showcase the power of poetry to represent identity and diversity. It takes place on Friday 8 March.
Works from the ground-breaking anthology Stairs & Whispers: D/deaf and Disabled Poets Write Back will be performed, as well as work by current students.
Organiser Janet Harper from the university's student wellbeing service says: "The anthology promotes the social model of disability politics. We're all responsible for each other, we need to understand others' experiences
"People are not so much disabled by their bodies or minds as they are by how society sees them. Enabling everyone can change attitudes. We want to bring something new and real to the conversation on disability. Things are improving but society has a long way to go.
"It's good to hear the poets' own voices, to hear them talk about their lives. The university aims to help disabled students and we can all learn from their experiences what changes we can make for them."
