New head for leading School of Pharmacy

Universities of Greenwich and Kent welcome appointment of Professor Susan Barker, who will join Medway School of Pharmacy from UCL.

Professor Susan Barker has been announced as the new Head of the Medway School of Pharmacy.

She will take up her new post in April, joining the school from UCL where she is currently an Associate Professor of Pharmacy.

Following her professional qualifications, Professor Barker spent nine years working in the in research-based international pharmaceutical company Merck, Sharp and Dohme, before returning to academia.

Whilst at the University of East Anglia she was the recipient of an Excellence in Teaching Award.  Her research is in the area of medicines' design, with a focus on ocular medicines and nanofabrication technologies.

Professor Barker's appointment was warmly welcomed by Professor Martin Snowden, Pro Vice-Chancellor International and Head of the Faculty of Engineering and Science at the University of Greenwich, and Professor Mark Burchell, Dean of Sciences at the University of Kent.

Professor Snowden said: "I am delighted that Susan will be joining us. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience and I know she has the vision to continue to drive the school's success with an absolute focus on providing the best possible education and support to our students."

Professor Burchell added: "Susan will be an excellent addition to the School of Pharmacy. I'd like to congratulate her on her appointment and look forward to working with her when she joins us in April."

Professor Barker said: "I am really looking forward to joining the Medway School of Pharmacy and working with the excellent staff and students to exploit their full potential."

The Medway School is in the top ten of universities providing pharmacy education, with 87.8 per cent of its students passing the General Pharmaceutical Council's Registration Scheme first time.

It is a unique collaboration between the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent. Located at the heart of the multi-university campus development at Chatham Maritime in Medway, Kent, it aims to produce high-quality professional graduates through innovative teaching and research.
