The University of Greenwich is providing new opportunities at doctoral level for students following a multi-million euro award from the European Union.

Phase two of the project, led by the University Alliance as part of their Doctoral Training Alliance (DTA), launches today (4 March) and the final deadline for applications is 12 April 2019.

The funding will create more than 80 fellowships at 15 participating institutions, including Greenwich, who will work across applied biosciences for health, energy and social policy.

The University of Greenwich will be providing two doctoral opportunities at the university to undertake projects relating to Bioscience and Health and energy areas.

Head of Research and Enterprise Training and DTA Programme lead for Greenwich, Aradhana Mehra, said: "We were delighted to select two doctoral students during the first round of this project in 2018 and welcome applications for phase 2.

"Participants will be employed for 36 months and have access to a range of support, both from the University and the wider DTA community. It is a fantastic opportunity to develop skills and prepare for future employment and will produce highly-skilled researchers with knowledge and expertise in important research areas."

To qualify to apply, applicants will need to be 'early-stage researchers' (i.e. in the first four years of their research careers and not have a doctoral degree); not have been resident, nor carried out their main activity, in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before taking up a DTA3 opportunity and not already be permanently employed by the entity where the DTA3 opportunity will take place.

University Alliance's successful bid was the only winning British entry in the funding round, out of five UK-based applications, and is one of eight programmes across Europe to win support narrowed down from 29 bidders. It scored the highest out of any successful bid in the 'impact', 'excellence' and 'quality and efficiency' judging categories.

Professor John Latham, Chair of University Alliance and VC of Coventry University commented: "It's fantastic to see the DTA3/COFUND programme go from strength to strength.

"We know from both member universities and students that the opportunity to work across a wide network of experts whilst studying at one of the UK's top technical and professional universities is a huge bonus for students and supervisors. The valuable resources and support that the programme provides help to make this a leading model for how to recruit and train PhD candidates."

The project has received funding from the EU's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sktodowska-Curie grant agreement No 801604.

The new opportunities created through the programme are advertised here and those interested can apply online.
