Al-hassan researches public services and social movements with a focus on Africa. Al-hassan joined the Public Services International Research Unit (PSIRU) in 2021 where he is an Associate Researcher and pursuing a PhD degree. His PhD research is on “Drivers and Approaches of Private Equity Investment in Global Healthcare Systems”.

Responsibilities within the university

Al-hassan was part of the PSIRU Team that won a $70,000 grants from Open Society Foundation to produce a report on ‘Shifting Narratives in Public Services’.

Research / Scholarly interests

Public services management and reforms (water, education and health), social movements and non-state actors influence on public services.

Al-hassan co-authored with Kate Bayliss a book chapter titled “Where Have All the Alternatives Gone? The Shrinking of African Water Policy Options”. He has written several popular materials on water privatisation in Africa and several blogs on human rights to water and sanitation.
