Research / Scholarly interests

Darrens research trajectory has evolved from a critical analysis of global trade and environmental politics to the practical implementation of sustainability in professional pedagogy. His early work (1996–2003) focused on the impact of the WTO and GATS on sustainable tourism, alongside studies of political activism and urban development in Europe. This foundational period explored how international policy frameworks intersect with local environmental movements and corporate interests.

In recent years, his focus has shifted toward Carbon Literacy and Systems Thinking, specifically through high-impact workshops in Mexico (2023–2025). By applying sustainable design principles to diverse sectors including automotive logistics, architecture, creative arts and festivals, his work has transitioned from theoretical critique to pragmatic educational leadership. His current work emphasizes curriculum enhancement and "responsible design," bridging the gap between global climate agreements and actionable industry standards.
