Dr Ayodeji Ibitoye BSc, MSc, PhD

Senior Lecturer in Data Science

Dr Ayodeji Ibitoye is a Senior Lecturer in Computing and Data Science at the University of Greenwich and a Senior Fellow of Advance HE. His research explores how artificial intelligence and data science can be used responsibly to support better decision-making by people and organisations, with interests in trustworthy AI, human-centred technologies and the wider societal impact of AI.

His research agenda centres on AI and Data Science for Social Good, examining how computational methods can be developed and applied to challenges in health, education, businesses, digital wellbeing, safety and other socially consequential areas. His work applies machine learning and data-driven methods to real-world problems while investigating how AI systems can be more transparent, fair, accountable and responsive to human needs. Ayodeji leads and contributes to interdisciplinary and funded research spanning the technical, human and societal dimensions of artificial intelligence. His wider scholarship examines algorithmic governance, AI-mediated decision-making and how individuals and institutions respond to growing reliance on intelligent systems.

Alongside his research, Ayodeji provides educational leadership in artificial intelligence and data science. At Greenwich, he leads and contributes to the design and delivery of curricula across machine learning, AI and data science, integrating technical knowledge, ethical reasoning and real-world problem-solving. He supervises applied research projects and has interests in authentic assessment, AI-enabled pedagogy and approaches that connect research, professional practice and student learning.

He brings more than a decade of experience across higher education, research, technology leadership and professional practice. Before joining the University of Greenwich, he held academic and institutional leadership roles, including Interim Head of the Department of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at Koladaisi University, Nigeria and Director of Digital Services at Bowen University, Nigeria. In these roles, he contributed to academic programme development, staff development, digital learning and institution-wide digital transformation.

Beyond the University, Ayodeji supports research capacity building through interdisciplinary collaboration, peer review, knowledge exchange and the mentoring of emerging researchers. He serves as a Research Mentor with the PRISM AI Safety Research Fellowship and the Tech Forward AI Governance Fellowship, and is involved in international initiatives spanning machine learning, deep learning and computational research education.

Ayodeji holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria and an MBA in Strategic Leadership from Valar Institute, USA. He also holds professional certification in agile project management. His academic trajectory has evolved from information retrieval and predictive modelling to broader questions concerning responsible AI, human interaction with intelligent systems and the governance of emerging technologies. Across his research, education and leadership, Ayodeji works to advance responsible AI and data science that strengthen decision-making, build human and institutional capability, and deliver benefits for society.
