Lazaros Filippidis

Lazaros Filippidis BSc Hons, MSc

Senior Lecturer in Evacuation Modelling

Mr Lazaros Filippidis is a Senior Lecturer in Evacuation Modelling at the Fire Safety Engineering Group of the University of Greenwich which he joined in 1996.

He is involved in the research and development of the EXODUS evacuation models. His key research area involves human behaviour in emergencies, adaptive behaviour, data collection and live trials. He has worked on numerous large-scale projects including, the EU funded Framework 5 projects FireExit (2001 – 2005) and VELA (2002 – 2005), Framework 6 projects AVATARS (2005 – 2008) and NACRE (2005 – 2009), the Framework 7 projects BESECU (2008 – 2011), SAFEGUARD (2009 – 2012), IDIRA (2011 – 2015) and GETAWAY (2011 – 2014), and the Horizon 2020 project AUGGMED (2015 – 2018) and IN-PREP (2017 – 2021). His responsibilities for these projects included the development of live trial protocols and implementation of full-scale evacuation trials, collection and interpretation of human performance data, analysis of human behaviour, development of crisis management scenarios, and the development of their corresponding evacuation simulation models for the aviation, built, maritime industries, including urban/rural scale setups. For some of these projects he assumed managerial roles working successfully on very tight schedules in collaboration with industrial partners. He is also part of the associate experts of the Horizon 2020 FIRE-IN (2017 - 2022) project advising on the state of the art of evacuation modelling software solutions.

Mr Filippidis holds a lead role in organising and delivering the annual Principles and Practice of Evacuation Modelling short course, contributes to the design of lecture material and manages laboratory sessions in the use of the EXODUS evacuation simulation tools. Furthermore, he has organised, developed, and delivered on-line e-learning courses as well as short courses to an international clientele.

A paper that Mr Filippidis co-authored has been awarded the Jack Bono Engineering Communications Award from the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (2008) and a further two that he co-authored have been awarded the Hodgson prize from the Royal Aeronautical Society (1998 and 2002)
