Prisca Schmarsow FHEA

Senior Lecturer in UI Design

Prisca is a Senior Lecturer in UI Design, and a Practising web designer with over 25 years of experience across the design industry and higher education. She has worked as a web designer since 2000, and still splits her time roughly equally between professional practice and teaching: this dual role, grounded in the working realities of the industry, is one of her real strengths in the classroom.

Her background is in web and digital design, and she cares deeply about making the web work for everyone: inclusive, accessible design sits at the heart of everything she does.

What she enjoys most is working with students and watching them flourish, introducing them to the possibilities of the web and helping them build the confidence to experiment, question, and find their own approach. She is known for her enthusiasm, and loves nothing more than sparking that same curiosity in others.

Alongside her teaching, Prisca writes and maintains Design for Web, an open-access handbook that supports students both within and beyond the classroom. It reflects her commitment to making design knowledge freely available.

She is also curious about the evolving relationship between design and artificial intelligence. Through her ongoing project The Cost of AI, she reflects on how the conversation around AI is changing, and what it means for designers and educators.

Outside work, Prisca enjoys walking in woodland and creating art inspired by nature, finding that time spent observing the natural world often brings fresh perspective to creativity, technology, and design.

Responsibilities within the university

Research / Scholarly interests

My scholarly interests are grounded in professional practice rather than traditional research. As a practising designer and educator, I am interested in how the principles that underpin good design - typography, hierarchy, colour, composition and user-centred thinking - can be taught in ways that build confidence, critical thinking and reflective practice. Accessibility and inclusive design run through all of this work. I am particularly interested in how these principles can be embedded in design education from the outset, rather than treated as an afterthought.

Much of my scholarly output takes the form of open educational resources. I write and maintain Design for Web, used internationally to support the teaching of design for digital contexts. It has been assigned an ISBN and is listed on ORCID and GALA, alongside other teaching materials and pedagogic outputs I have deposited there. More recently, I have become interested in the relationship between design education and artificial intelligence - both its practical uses and its wider costs - which I explore through my project The Cost of AI. In future, I hope to develop this work further, formalising Design for Web and expanding my pedagogic work on accessible, ethical and AI-aware design education.
