Lecturer in Histories and Theories of Architecture

Shiyu Jin is a Lecturer in Histories and Theories of Architecture at the University of Greenwich. Before joining the university, he taught in the History and Theory Studies programme at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, where he served as a seminar tutor.

He is currently completing his PhD at the AA School. His doctoral research examines the typological transformation of the Shanghai Lane House (lilong) during the colonial period of modern China, employing a postcolonial theoretical framework to analyse the socio-spatial implications of this hybrid architectural form.

Shiyu holds an M.S. in Advanced Architectural Design from Cornell University and a B.Arch from Tongji University.

Shiyu’s research interests include domestic space, architectural type and typology, colonial architecture and urban transformation, as well as postcolonial architectural writing. His doctoral research examines the concept of type and typology through a postcolonial lens, using the Lane House as a case study—a representative form of domestic architecture in Shanghai during the colonial period of modern China
