M³4Impact

Expanding two world-leading research teams to deliver high-impact outcomes for society.

What is M³4Impact?

M³4Impact is a five-year programme to expand two world-leading research teams at the University of Greenwich. In 2024, we secured £9m from Research England’s E3 fund, which supports the strategic growth of excellent research units, to expand their activity to deliver transformative economic, environmental, and societal impact. This investment recognises our strength in delivering on key UK strategic research priorities.

How will M³4Impact enable expansion?

£9m investment to expand over five years

Doubling our headcount from 17 to 34 staff

Recruiting at least 17 new PhD students

New research capabilities across three themes

Investment in new high-performance computing technology

Capacity to triple our research income

Increased research support functions

Development of three related new MSc Courses

What will the M³4Impact programme do?

We will grow our expertise in Multi-Scale, Multi-Disciplinary Modelling (M³) and we will deliver high-quality, high-impact research outcomes (Impact) to address societal challenges affecting the environment, quality of life, safety, security, and the economy.

We have three research themes as a focus for growth:
  • Materials Science and Engineering
  • Safety and Security
  • Digital Cities

Get involved with M³4Impact

We are always looking to partner with businesses on our world-leading research. Here are some of the ways you can get involved:

  • Get expert input. We work collaboratively with businesses and consultancies, providing advice, support with technical work, and modelling expertise.
  • Work with us on a research project or idea. We are looking to collaborate on new research and innovation that can have a real impact for your business. This can be done directly, or there are dedicated schemes in the UK that we can plug in to (such as Knowledge Transfer Partnerships).
  • Partner with us for a research proposal. Working together, we can seek funding for cutting edge research and innovation that can support your business and clients, with lasting benefits to society (for example through EU Horizon or UK EPSRC funding bodies).
  • Stay on top of the latest thinking. We deliver research briefings, training and CPD to support your business in using cutting-edge research in your day-to-day work and upskilling your staff to meet the challenges of the future.
  • Study with us. We have a variety of taught courses (e.g. MSc) and research courses (e.g. MRes or PhD) with flexible delivery so that you can study part time while you work.
  • Share your expertise. Help us to understand your business and sector to inform our teaching and research. Together we can horizon-scan to identify and address emerging challenges.
  • Supervise with us. Co-supervise research students with us to share your expertise and get the best of the next generation of researchers.
