Why Lara chose MA Digital Arts: Insights from a University of Greenwich student

TLDRoffon

We recently interviewed Lara, an MA Digital Arts student, at our annual MA Postgraduate Show. After studying Product Design in America for her bachelor’s, Lara pursued a career to develop artistic skills and discovered the MA Digital Arts course.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your work?

MA Digital Arts student Lara Heather at the MA Postgraduate Show 2024"I have three different pieces, all based around the relationship between mother and child. My main inspiration for this project was looking at Renaissance art and remixing those pieces. Banksy had previously done something similar, which really inspired me. So, I’ve digitally modified these paintings, added in my own experiences of my relationship with my mother, and incorporated my skeleton drawings, where I focus on fine line work, to create a Portrait Gallery-style presentation."

Why did you choose to study MA Digital Arts?

Work by Lara Heather - MA Digital Arts "I did my Product Design bachelor’s in America, but I came back home and wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do. I knew I wanted to stay in education, and since I was always drawing, I thought, why not do something a bit more artistic? After attending a Greenwich Open Day, I ended up loving it and decided to apply. I also had a video call with Jim Hobbs – one of my teachers – and he just really inspired me. Everything about the course was exactly what I wanted – to become more confident in my artistic group and to have no boundaries... and that’s what this course has given me!"

What new skills have you learned through this course?

"Through this course, I’ve definitely been able to incorporate my emotions into my projects to give them more meaning, as well as test out a variety of software. We’ve done a lot of crits, where we get to show our work and receive feedback from others, and the chance to talk about our own process, which is not something I did much before. Overall, this course has taught me to be more confident, think outside the box, and just be brave."

What would you say to someone considering pursuing a master's degree?

"I would recommend studying a postgraduate course because it not only builds confidence and experience, but you also meet amazing people. It helps you navigate through life and figure out what you want to do, while enjoying the process. Over the past year, I’ve had amazing experiences, worked with great facilities, and met people from all over the world. I would always encourage people to expand their knowledge. Education is fun and should be something that builds you up and makes you feel good about yourself!"

We hope Lara’s experience inspires you to find our own creative journey.
