What were you doing before pursuing a Master’s degree?
I completed a BA in International Relations in Mexico and worked for five
years at the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance. My role involved interviewing people who had fled their countries due to violence and persecution and assessing their cases. I loved my job and wanted to better understand the roots of crime and violence, as well as how the system can either contribute to or prevent them.
Why did you choose this Master’s course?
The Criminology and Criminal Psychology course at Greenwich offered a great balance between criminology and criminal psychology, which helped me understand both the legal and practical approaches to criminality. The structure also allows flexibility as I’m only on campus twice a week, which makes it easier to manage assignments and readings.
Greenwich itself is a wonderful place to study. In my free time, I enjoy visiting Greenwich Market and exploring the local cafés. One of my favourites is the Queen Mary Café on campus - it’s a bit quieter, making it a perfect spot to read and work!
What was your favourite module and why?
I enjoyed all my modules and learned a great deal from every professor but Restorative Justice was my favourite. It was a concept I hadn’t encountered before and wasn’t one of my original elective choices, but after speaking with the programme leader, I decided to give it a try, and I absolutely loved it!
The professor’s engaging and passionate teaching style made the subject come alive and completely changed my perspective on how the criminal justice system could be reformed to better support victims.
Through this module, I also had the opportunity to earn a certification as a Restorative Justice Facilitator which was an enriching experience that allowed me to put theory into practice. This was especially valuable as restorative justice is still developing in Mexico, so gaining these skills in the UK gave me opportunities I wouldn’t have had back home.
Would you recommend studying a Master’s to future students?
Absolutely - it exceeded my expectations! I pursued this Master’s degree to achieve a new academic goal and specialise in a subject I’m truly passionate about. At first, I was nervous about returning to education after several years, but from the very beginning, my classmates and professors at the University of Greenwich were incredibly supportive. I always felt confident that I was in the right place, and I know I made the best decision choosing to study at Greenwich!
I didn’t have a background in criminology or psychology, but my professional experience gave me a strong foundation to succeed in the programme - and I graduated with distinction. It was an amazing journey, and I’d encourage anyone considering this path to take the leap. You won’t regret it!
