Meet Paris: a Digital Marketing and Advertising student putting his ideas to work

Paris built a social media strategy for a fashion model agency in his final year. The agency has asked him to help bring it to life after he graduates.

Paris is a final-year BA Digital Marketing and Advertising student at Greenwich Business School. For his final-year consultancy project, he built a social media strategy for a fashion model agency, and they've asked him to help put it into practice once he graduates.

Here's his story, in his own words.

Choosing marketing, and choosing Greenwich

Paris went into Digital Marketing and Advertising knowing what he wanted from it. Marketing, in his view, is how businesses reach people now, and the subject gave him room to be creative and strategic in the same breath. "I chose Digital Marketing and Advertising because digital marketing is essential for how businesses communicate with audiences today," he explains, "and it also gives me the chance to use my creativity in a strategic way."

Greenwich won out for practical reasons and personal ones. Paris is a Londoner and wanted to study in the city without leaving home behind, and the transport connections made that easy.

As a London-based student, I wanted to study in London while staying close to home. Greenwich stood out to me because of its great transport connections and the lively area around the campus. There is a lot to do nearby, from visiting Greenwich Market to exploring Greenwich Park.

A final-year project with a fashion model agency

The work Paris is proudest of came in his final year, on a consultancy project built around a problem a fashion model agency genuinely needed solving. He produced a social media strategy and a set of practical recommendations, and they landed well enough that the agency wants him back. Once he graduates, he'll get the chance to help put some of those ideas into practice.

"This project gave me valuable experience in applying what I had learned during my course to a real business context," he says. "It also helped me build confidence in my strategic thinking and problem-solving skills."

Lecturers who bring the industry into the room

The teaching staff made more of a difference than Paris expected, especially in the stretch when everything still feels new. He describes them as "kind, supportive and understanding," which counts for a lot when you're finding your way.

What caught him off guard was how often the teaching drew on the lecturers' own time in industry. They'd share stories from the jobs they'd actually done, and those moments stuck with him.

These insights gave me a better understanding of what working in marketing can actually look like and made my learning experience feel more relevant and engaging.

A mentor in the industry from year one

In his first year, Paris was paired with a mentor working in communications at RSK Group, and the introduction went wider than one person, with the team around her brought in too. Seeing how they worked gave him a feel for the different roles inside marketing and what the day-to-day looks like for client-side marketers.

The help didn't stop at watching from the sidelines. His mentor and her team talked him through CV writing and career advice. It "gave me more confidence when applying for jobs and thinking about my future career."

Where he's heading next

Paris already knows where he wants this to go. "I hope to become a marketing strategist, build my experience with smaller brands, and eventually work with established businesses or agencies."

His advice for anyone thinking about the course is: If marketing is the goal, Digital Marketing and Advertising at Greenwich gives you a strong introduction to the industry, and the extras around it matter as much as the modules themselves. "The networking opportunities, guest speakers and employability support can really help you understand where you might fit within the marketing world."
