More than numbers: Daleni’s journey through Economics, BSc Hons

“My advice is to always participate in lectures and tutorials - don’t just sit back and listen. Get involved, ask questions, and challenge yourself".

Daleni's journey began during A-levels when she first realised the power of economics in shaping societies, influencing policies, and solving real-world problems. The University of Greenwich stood out to her because of its diverse curriculum, offering everything from environmental economics to global financial systems.

As she puts it, “Since learning about economics at A-levels, I knew this was something I wanted to pursue in depth. The variety of modules at Greenwich really stood out to me, especially their approach to teaching economics from multiple perspectives”.

Embracing academic challenges

University wasn’t just about lectures and exams for Daleni. it was about diving deep into subjects that fascinated her. Some of the most exciting yet demanding modules she encountered were econometrics and data analysis. While the technical side of these subjects was daunting at first, the support of her lecturers made all the difference.

“Even though the topics were difficult at times, the teachers were very supportive and made the lectures fun and interactive. I loved the challenge, and it helped me develop problem-solving skills that I know will be useful in the future”.

She appreciated that learning wasn’t a solitary process at Greenwich, there was always a space for discussion, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Getting involved beyond the classroom

Daleni didn’t just focus on academics; she threw herself into university life. She joined societies like Rethinking Economics and the Space Society, connecting with students who shared her curiosity for economics and beyond. These experiences helped her broaden her perspectives and engage in meaningful debates.

But one of the most rewarding parts of her university journey was working as a Student Ambassador. Apart from earning some extra income, she also developed real-world skills that she knows would be valuable beyond graduation.

“Being a Student Ambassador was an amazing experience. It gave me the chance to work alongside my studies, gain hands-on skills, and connect with different people across the university”.

Bringing theory into practice

One of the most exciting aspects of studying economics was seeing its practical applications. Statistics and data analysis weren’t just abstract concepts in a textbook, they became tools that Daleni could use in real-world projects. Learning Excel and data modelling gave her the confidence to tackle both academic and personal projects.

“Before university, I wasn’t confident using Excel, but now I can work on various projects with ease. It’s great to see how the skills I’ve learned apply in real-world situations.”

These practical experiences made her realise that economics was more than an academic subject - it was a skillset she could carry into her future career.

Looking ahead: what’s next?

As she prepares to graduate, Daleni is excited about the road ahead. The foundation she has built at Greenwich has given her the confidence to take the next step in her journey: pursuing a master’s degree in data analysis. She is particularly interested in how data can be used to understand economic trends and influence decision-making in businesses and governments.

“I’d love to pursue a master’s degree in data analysis. Greenwich has really prepared me well for the next step, and I’m excited to see where my career in economics takes me”.

Advice for future students

For anyone considering economics at Greenwich, Daleni has one key piece of advice: take every opportunity that comes your way. Whether it’s engaging in lectures, joining societies, or finding work experience, every experience adds to your journey.

“My advice is to always participate in lectures and tutorials - don’t just sit back and listen. Get involved, ask questions, and challenge yourself. Also, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, whether it’s joining a society, making new friends, or taking on a role like Student Ambassador. Every experience will help you grow and make your time at university much more rewarding”.
