Greenwich makes sure students are supported academically and equipped with expert knowledge.

Currently in her second year, Abiodun Ijiyode tells us why she decided to study Adult Nursing BSc Hons at Greenwich

“I chose to study at Greenwich because of its reputation for high quality teaching and its ethnically diverse student body.” Abiodun told us. “It is also one of the best universities in my locality that meets my needs in terms of commuting distance to the university or placement.”

Abiodun told us that her experience at Greenwich has so far been very interesting even though she joined the university when the global pandemic was at its peak. “The lecturers were very helpful and supportive in providing useful educational materials for various modules during the online lectures.” Abiodun explained. “I enjoyed anatomy and physiology during my first year and pathophysiology in my second year. The knowledge I have gained has helped me to develop my knowledge on how diseases affect the body and has enabled me to provide accurate and quality care during my placement.”

Although all her lectures have been online due to the global pandemic so far, Abiodun says that whilst this is challenging, it has helped her to be dedicated and independent in her self-learning. “The lecturers are equipped with knowledge and their support is invaluable.” She explained. “The clinical skills sessions on campus also help in developing practical learning and the seminar groups which consist of smaller student groups enable better participation and understanding. The lecturers are very personable about what they do and inspire students to succeed in their academic study.

Abiodun told us about her placement experience. “In Year One had a variety of placements including the ambulatory care unit, the endoscopy ward, and a stroke ward. Despite the challenge of working long hours, it was very rewarding because of the sense of fulfillment in making an impact on people’s lives and learning new skills. In Year Two, I started my placement in a medical ward. I am now placed in the surgical ward unit where I'm able to provide care and support for patients for pre- and post-surgery. The knowledge I gained has contributed to my growth and development and likewise my confidence. I am able to develop my skill in teamwork and work with other members of a multidisciplinary team, I have learnt how to manage my work loads and to prioritise the needs of the patients.

The second-year student also praised the social side of her university experience. “I have made great friends who are very passionate about caring and impacting people’s lives. We have been supporting each other despite there being a global pandemic.”

When we asked Abiodun if she would recommend the course, she responded, “I would highly recommend this course to anyone who is passionate about caring for people and willing to make a positive impact in people's lives. Being able to care for patients is a privilege. Although nursing is very rigorous and demanding, if the University of Greenwich is chosen, students will be supported academically and equipped with expert knowledge. Caring for me is a way of life. Being on placements has helped me to develop my confidence and competence in nursing skills with different experiences every day. The Adult Nursing course comprises of people with different ages, backgrounds and experiences which makes the university diverse. At The University of Greenwich, students always stand out and I would recommend anyone to study at this great establishment to fulfill their potential.”

We thank Abiodun for sharing her story and wish her all the best for the future!
