"I’m studying Midwifery (Degree Apprenticeship) and the employer I am with is the Medway Foundation Trust.”
As we asked Laura what she finds to be the most difficult part of her apprenticeship, she said that it was the ability to manage her time, keeping track of her phone diary and wall planner, and her academic work, particularly essays, but utilising university support has got her over these hurdles.
“I chose this apprenticeship because I cannot afford to train the traditional way, and I extremely enjoy the fact that I can train and still manage my family. What satisfies me the most is knowing I am achieving the career I have wanted to do for 20 years.”
For those with no knowledge of apprenticeships and midwifery, Laura describes it simply as; “Hard work, but worth it. Best of both worlds. You think you have an idea of what midwifery entails. even working as an MSW, but you actually have no clue. It's one of the most intense, fascinating things. The placement will teach you as much if not more than the university.”
“What makes Greenwich special or different to other universities, is that they are the only university that has the apprenticeship scheme locally. The staff at my trust always comment on the high calibre of Greenwich students.”
Laura goes on to tell us which career paths one can take with this course: “Midwifery, some then go on to be a neonatal nurse/sonographer. This subject has a massive impact on peoples’ lives. It's something that will always be needed.”
Finally, Laura explains the benefits this apprenticeship will have on her career development; “It enables me to fulfil my dream. I have not thought beyond qualifying. At present I do not wish to do any post graduate qualifications.
