Brand new BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practitioner programme!

We asked programme leader Geeta Hardath about the new programme, due to start in September 2022.

Surging into the future is our new undergraduate BSc Hons Operating Department Practitioner programme. The overall aim of the programme is to prepare Award holders to apply for professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a registered Operating Department Practitioner.

Operating Department Practitioner is aimed at people who have a passion and commitment to deliver high standards of care to patients undergoing surgery. The programme offers an apprenticeship route for those already working in the clinical setting and a fee-paying route with both full time and part-time attendance. It combines both academic and clinical practice to allow students to put their learning into practice and develop the skills required to care for patients, primarily in the operating department.

Students will have the opportunity to practice their skills in our new high-tech simulation labs and complete their placement experience in modern operating theatre suites in NHS and private hospitals. Some students will have the opportunity to complete a Surgical First Assistant Skills endorsement to develop specialist skills to assist surgeons during surgery.

Geeta told us “As programme leader, I feel this programme will equip students with up-to-date evidence-based knowledge and skills, to deliver high quality of care and meet service needs in today’s complex and challenging health care environment.”
