Impress major businesses

Out of many students who applied, Civil Engineering with Industrial Practice, MSc student Aleena Mathew was successful in being selected to take part in February’s #GreHacks event, a University of Greenwich Generator initiative that connects students with employers through a two-day hack-style event. As with other #GreHacks events, students were set relevant workplace challenges to solve by a major business – in this case, London-based construction and engineering business Kilnbridge – for the opportunity to showcase skills, build new professional and entrepreneurial skills and network.

Aleena’s team won the first prize at the event, making her eligible to apply for the two-week internship at Kilnbridge on offer to challenge winners. She applied, and was thrilled to learn she had secured the coveted role.

Learn from the best leaders

The MSc in Civil Engineering is the second Master’s degree Aleena is working towards. She first completed a Master's degree in Ocean Technology at a university in India, and then worked as a project scientist.

She decided she wanted to challenge herself by obtaining another Master’s degree. She chose to study civil engineering as she was intrigued by the discipline, explaining that civil engineers are an integral part of society as they provide facilities and services that improve functionality and quality of life. She knew the University of Greenwich would be the right place for her after hearing positive feedback from alumni of the course and learning about the university’s diverse community. She also valued that the university offered the opportunity to study MSc Civil Engineering with an industrial practice year, which she was keen to do to build her industry skills.

Learning from the best leaders across the country with a curriculum that is designed to produce quality engineers helped me to mould into the person I am today.

Develop yourself at Greenwich

Aleena concludes that the internship with Kilnbridge, which she has now completed, is only one such opportunity to develop herself that was presented to her during her time at Greenwich.

The University not only focuses on education but also extra-curricular activities. Libraries, the Students’ Union, and student events make the university dynamic. There is no limit to anything and everything.
