Lord Boateng The first of this year's University of Greenwich graduates celebrated their success today, alongside the university's new Chancellor.

The Right Honourable Lord Paul Boateng was formally inaugurated as the fifth Chancellor of the University of Greenwich during a ceremony in the historic chapel on the Old Royal Naval College site.

And his first job was to take part in the event for students in the university's Business Faculty, one of twenty-one ceremonies taking place over the next fortnight which will see 5,000 students graduate.

Lord Boateng expressed pride in his appointment, saying: "This university stands for inclusion, opportunity and excellence in education while reaching out to the wider world and equipping successive generations with the tools they will need to make a difference."

Lord Boateng was previously a Labour Member of Parliament, acting as Minister of State at the Home Office and subsequently first Minister for Young People and Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 2002.

He served as the British High Commissioner to South Africa from March 2005 to May 2009 and joined the House of Lords in 2010.

Speaking directly to the students graduating today he added: "There's nothing you cannot achieve. This is only the beginning. The best is yet to come."
