Significant industry experience is "now essential" Articles

"Industry experience is now essential," says Katherine Leopold who works in the Employability Office. "The recent High Fliers report looking at the top 100 UK companies running graduate recruitment schemes reveals 70 per cent do not even consider applications from graduates without significant industry experience."

Our Employability & Careers Service aims to give you the confidence and skills to stand head and shoulders above the rest, and James Woodland who recently secured a one year placement with Airbus has done just that.

Securing an unadvertised placement

Airbus advertised three, one-year paid placements based in its resources and contracts management team. James was invited to interview and take part in a group exercise, and was then offered a fourth unadvertised placement in operations management.

"It is an amazing opportunity," says James. "This placement is absolutely perfect for me – even better than the advertised placements. It gives me a major step up in my ambition to build a career in the aircraft industry."

He also said that the advice he received from the Employability & Careers Service was "invaluable" and involved practical steps that helped him improve his chances of success.

Congratulations James, and well done.
