Across October, we hosted five vibrant events (three pop-ups, one session and one keynote talk) and attended one external event, ‘Black Tech Fest’. Read more about them below!
EmpowerED Pop-Ups
We welcomed four employers on campus to host pop-ups and share their career opportunities. The pop-ups were a huge success, with students coming away feeling inspired and our employers signing up to our upcoming events!
On Day one, we welcomed 20/20 Levels, a social mobility organisation that work to empower Black and racially underrepresented young people through various opportunities to maximise their potential.
On Day two, The Sapphire Community Group, an organisation that supports all BAME people with employability, housing, wellbeing and food support, came onto campus to provide advice, guidance and offer opportunities to students.
On Day three, Teach First and NHS SlAm came together to deliver a pop-up to students keen to positively impact the local community and get involved in meaningful causes.
Online Scheme Day
With virtual sessions throughout the day, our Online Scheme Day spotlighted existing schemes that support Black talent in their chosen careers and featured speakers from external employers (Girls Talk Corporation, Organic PR, 20/20 Levels) and team members from our Employability Service. The event garnered huge interest for Organic’s Origins Scheme, and students were keen to explore our mentoring, placements and internship offerings.
Celebrating Black Wealth and Saluting our Sisters
We warmly welcomed Roneish Myers, UoG Alumni and founder of financial coaching service Money Heave, to deliver a talk about Black wealth and the power of sisterhood. We also extended our invite beyond students, to welcome seven external attendees and 23 staff members. The inspiring talk was followed by an evening of mingling and networking, which led to positive student feedback and employers signing up to future events.
Black Tech Fest
Held a short walk from North Greenwich station, Black Tech Fest is Europe’s largest event of its kind, delivering three action-packed days of inspiring panel discussions, employer pop-ups, immersive experience sessions and much more! In addition to promoting the events to UoG students, we visited the event to meet with employers whilst celebrating Black culture and its influence on technology. Watch our video about it here.
