Takeover Day
In October, we hosted our annual Takeover Day at CAFC, which saw the university ‘take over’ the grounds with several Student Ambassadors shadowing front-of-house staff to gain practical hands-on experience and Employability Champions filming ‘Day in the Life’ content to encourage others to attend future match days. Milly Jacobs, one of our Student Ambassadors, enjoyed the experience so much that she secured a part-time job at CAFC.
Red, White and Black Day
Next was our Red, White and Black Day which has been running for over 30 years and celebrates Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI).
Addicks fan and University of Greenwich student, Harriet shadowed CAFC’s media professional, Charlotte Richardson, allowing her to gain valuable insights into sports commentary. Read about Harriet’s full experience here.
Three Student Ambassadors - Maitreyi Kulkarni, Purav Agarwal and Syed Taabish Ali featured in CAFC’s Red, White and Black Day Promo Video which was shared on social media and shown before the match.
Greener Game
In January, we celebrated the first Greener Game of the year, along with CAFC, CACT and RSK to promote sustainability in football.
We welcomed staff and Year 10 students from St Mary Magdalene School who showcased a sustainable football kit they designed, with Sky Sports filming their entire journey (watch the full video here). Simon Goldsmith, Head of Strategic Sustainability at the university also highlighted football’s role in driving sustainability.
Across both the men’s and women’s games, fans were encouraged to donate old and unused kit and use eco-friendly transport to The Valley.
Football v Homophobia
In February, we celebrated the Football v Homophobia themed match day and the Proud Valiants’ 10th anniversary.
Employability Champion, Irene had the chance to join the “Les Run X Charlton Athletic” 5-kilometre run and film an exciting ‘Come run with me’ video.
The Proud Valiants also handed out a special plaque to the University of Greenwich to recognise their decade of support.
Her Game Too
March’s Her Game Too themed match day was dedicated to championing women in football. Before the women’s game, we handed out “UoG X CAFC” friendship bracelets to young fans. We received some wonderful content from the women’s team and our Employability Champion, Armita also filmed a ‘Day in the Life’. Efforts were also made by the club to increase female representation in match-day roles.
At the men’s game, the Partnership Hub collaborated with the university’s Degree Apprenticeships team to deliver the pre-match reception and discuss the importance of women in sport.
Looking ahead
Although there are no more themed matchdays this academic year; University of Greenwich students, staff and alumni can enjoy £10 tickets to Charlton matches year-round. Email partnerships@gre.ac.uk to find out more.
