Attendance monitoring pilot: Checkin+ using the Study Goal app

TLDRoffon

We’re testing a new way of registering attendance at lectures, tutorials and other timetabled events on a small number of selected programmes within FEHHS and FBUS.

Capturing attendance for large cohorts can be time consuming so this trial will see whether we are able to successfully capture attendance through each students' mobile device/tablet in an efficient and accurate way.  Initially the trial will be for a small number of selected programmes, however if it's successful it may be expanded.

Checkin+ is part of the Study Goal app which already provides visualisations of your learning activities, such as how you use Moodle and shows you the same data your personal tutor sees.

While the Checkin+ feature will be visible in the app for everyone, it will only work for students who are part of the trialling programmes.

When you download the app (from your usual app store) 'geolocation' will be switched on. This provides a relative measure of where you are, so in the trial if most students check in from one location and another checks in from somewhere else, that person is considered absent. It does not provide the university with data on where you are on campus or elsewhere.

Your geolocation data should be provided with your consent and just like any app, you can choose to switch this off. Switching off geolocation will not stop you from checking in to lectures.

Please note: If you are part of the trial, although we have worked hard to tackle any issues before they appear, as with any other new system we may face obstacles, and therefore we want to thank you in advance for your patience.

We will be evaluating the pilot after Easter and will share the findings with you.  In the meantime if you have any issues or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the Learning Analytics team by email to PASLearningAnalytics@gre.ac.uk
